Andro Village

Andro, a traditional Meitei village near Imphal, is known for preserving distinctive local crafts, including black pottery made without a potter's wheel using techniques passed down through generations, and traditional rice beer (yu) production. A small living museum within the village showcases traditional Meitei architecture, tools and cultural artefacts, giving visitors a tangible introduction to rural Manipuri life and craft traditions.

Andro's continued practice of these traditional crafts, rather than presenting them purely as museum displays, gives the village a genuinely lived-in cultural authenticity, and its relatively short distance from Imphal makes it an easy half-day cultural excursion for visitors based in the capital.

Andro's pottery tradition, made without a wheel using a distinctive hand-building technique, is considered one of the oldest continuously practised craft methods in the region, predating the introduction of wheel-thrown pottery to the area.
