Bhangarh Fort

Bhangarh Fort, widely reputed to be India's most haunted location according to popular folklore, is a ruined 17th-century town and fort complex on the edge of Sariska Tiger Reserve, its abandoned temples, palaces and havelis scattered across the site giving it a genuinely atmospheric, eerie quality regardless of one's views on the supernatural legends attached to it. The Archaeological Survey of India officially prohibits entry after sunset and before sunrise, a restriction that has only added to the site's mysterious reputation.

Beyond its ghost-story fame, Bhangarh's ruins offer a genuine window into 17th-century Rajput town planning, with temples, market streets and residential areas all still traceable within the site, giving visitors interested in more conventional archaeological heritage plenty to explore alongside the site's popular supernatural notoriety.

Bhangarh Fort was constructed in the 17th century by Raja Madho Singh, the younger brother of Man Singh I of Amber. The fortified town developed into a prosperous settlement with markets, temples, havelis and a royal palace. Rajasthan Tourism notes that the town had more than 9,000 houses before its population gradually declined after around 1720.

Several legends surround the abandonment of Bhangarh, including stories of a curse associated with a sorcerer and Princess Ratnavati. These tales have contributed greatly to the fort's modern reputation as one of India's most mysterious destinations. Historically, however, the site is best understood as the remains of a once-prosperous fortified settlement that eventually declined.

By Air: Jaipur International Airport is the nearest major airport, approximately 85 km from Bhangarh Fort. Taxis and private vehicles are available for the onward journey.

By Train: Dausa Railway Station is the closest railhead, around 22 km away. Dausa has rail connections with Jaipur, Delhi and other cities. Taxis and local transport can be used from the station.

By Road: Bhangarh is accessible by road from Jaipur, Dausa, Alwar and Sariska. Private taxis and buses can be used, with the fort connected through the road network between Dausa, Thanagazi and Sariska.
