Introduction

Charminar is one of India's most iconic historical monuments, located in the heart of Hyderabad, Telangana. Built during the Qutb Shahi era, this magnificent structure is known for its four grand minarets, Indo-Islamic architecture, and historical importance. Standing near the historic Laad Bazaar and Mecca Masjid, Charminar has become the global symbol of Hyderabad's heritage, culture, and identity. The monument attracts visitors with its architectural beauty, vibrant surroundings, traditional markets, and rich connection to the city's history.

History

Charminar was built in 1591 CE by Sultan Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah, the fifth ruler of the Qutb Shahi dynasty, who also founded the city of Hyderabad. According to historical accounts, the monument was constructed to mark the establishment of Hyderabad and commemorate the end of a devastating plague that affected the region. The name Charminar comes from the Urdu words "Char" meaning four and "Minar" meaning minarets, referring to its four towering pillars. Each minaret rises to approximately 56 metres and contains multiple levels connected by spiral staircases. Built with granite, limestone, mortar, and marble, the monument reflects a blend of Persian, Islamic, and Indian architectural styles. Over the centuries, Charminar remained a centre of trade, culture, and religious activity. Today, it stands as a protected heritage monument and one of Telangana's most celebrated landmarks.
