Hussain Sagar Lake, at the heart of Hyderabad, is a large artificial lake connecting the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad, its centrepiece a massive monolithic Buddha statue rising from the water, one of the tallest such statues in the world. The lake's Tank Bund promenade, lined with statues of significant Telugu cultural and political figures, offers a popular evening walking route for city residents, particularly as the sun sets over the water.
Boat rides out to the Buddha statue give visitors a closer view of the monument, and Hussain Sagar's central position within the city makes it a natural anchor point for exploring both Hyderabad's older heritage sites and its more modern commercial districts nearby.
Built in 1562 during the Qutb Shahi period, Hussain Sagar was constructed to supply water and connect what were then the twin settlements of Hyderabad and Golconda, its more recent monolithic Buddha statue added in 1992 to become one of the lake's defining modern landmarks.
