Digboi

Digboi is a historic town in the Tinsukia district of Assam, famously known as the birthplace of the oil industry in India. Located near the foothills of the Patkai Range, Digboi is renowned for its century-old oil refinery, lush tea gardens, wildlife attractions, and colonial-era heritage. The town is home to the Digboi Oil Refinery, one of the oldest operating refineries in the world, and the nearby Digboi War Cemetery and Digboi Centenary Museum. The history of Digboi is closely connected with the discovery of crude oil in Assam during the late 19th century. The name "Digboi" is believed to have originated from the phrase "Dig, boy, dig", reportedly used by British workers during oil exploration. The Digboi Oil Refinery, established in 1901, became Asia's first oil refinery and played a major role in India's industrial development. During British rule, Digboi developed into an important centre for oil production, attracting workers, engineers, and businesses from different regions. Over the years, the town expanded while preserving its colonial heritage. Today, Digboi remains a symbol of India's early industrial growth and continues to be an important centre of the country's petroleum history.
