Bogibeel Bridge is India's longest rail-cum-road bridge located over the Brahmaputra River in Assam, connecting Dibrugarh and Dhemaji districts. Built with modern engineering technology, the bridge plays a vital role in improving transportation and connectivity in Upper Assam and the neighbouring northeastern states. Spanning approximately 4.94 kilometres, it serves both railway and road traffic, reducing travel time significantly between the northern and southern banks of the Brahmaputra. Surrounded by scenic river landscapes, Bogibeel Bridge is not only an important infrastructure landmark but also a popular attraction showcasing India's engineering achievements.
The idea of constructing Bogibeel Bridge was proposed in the late 20th century to improve connectivity in Assam and strengthen infrastructure in Northeast India. The foundation stone was laid in 1997 by Prime Minister H. D. Deve Gowda, and construction officially began in 2002. The project faced several delays due to technical challenges, environmental conditions, and the complexity of building over the mighty Brahmaputra River. After years of construction, the bridge was inaugurated on 25 December 2018 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Designed to withstand earthquakes due to the region's seismic activity, Bogibeel Bridge has become a major transportation link, supporting economic growth, defence connectivity, and regional development while standing as a landmark achievement in Indian infrastructure.
