Introduction

Dibru-Saikhowa National Park is a unique riverine national park located in the Dibrugarh and Tinsukia districts of Assam. Situated near the Brahmaputra and Dibru rivers, the park is known for its spectacular wetlands, grasslands, tropical forests, and rich biodiversity. It is one of the largest protected wetland ecosystems in Northeast India and is especially famous for its rare wildlife, including the feral horses, Bengal tigers, leopards, hoolock gibbons, wild water buffaloes, and numerous migratory birds. The park's peaceful waterways, dense forests, and vibrant birdlife make it a popular destination for wildlife enthusiasts, photographers, and nature lovers.

History

The Dibru-Saikhowa region has long been a naturally rich floodplain ecosystem shaped by the Brahmaputra and Dibru rivers. The area was initially declared a Wildlife Sanctuary in 1986 to protect its unique flora and fauna and was later upgraded to Dibru-Saikhowa National Park in 1999. The park was also designated as a Biosphere Reserve in 1997 due to its exceptional ecological importance. During the 19th and 20th centuries, parts of the region were affected by human activities, floods, and habitat changes, but conservation efforts helped protect its fragile ecosystem. Today, Dibru-Saikhowa remains an important refuge for endangered species and a vital conservation landscape representing the natural heritage of Assam's riverine forests and wetlands.
