Introduction

Dirang is a beautiful hill town located in the West Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh, situated in the Eastern Himalayas along the banks of the Dirang River. Known for its scenic valleys, snow-capped mountains, hot water springs, monasteries, and rich tribal culture, Dirang is one of the most charming destinations in the state. The town is home to the Monpa, Sherdukpen, and other indigenous communities, who have preserved their unique traditions, festivals, and lifestyles. Surrounded by apple orchards, waterfalls, and lush green landscapes, Dirang serves as an important stopover on the way to Tawang and attracts nature lovers, adventure seekers, and cultural travellers.

History

Dirang has a long history shaped by the indigenous tribes of the Eastern Himalayas, especially the Monpa and Sherdukpen communities. The region was historically an important settlement along ancient trade routes connecting Tibet, Bhutan, and the plains of Assam. The traditional Dirang Dzong, a fortified structure built several centuries ago, reflects the region's historical importance and was used for administration, defence, and community gatherings. During British rule, the area came under the administration of the North-East Frontier Agency (NEFA), and after India's independence, it became part of Arunachal Pradesh. Today, Dirang continues to preserve its ancient Buddhist influences, tribal heritage, and natural beauty, making it one of the most culturally significant hill destinations in the state.
