Thembang Heritage Village is an ancient fortified village located in the West Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh, near Bomdila. Situated at an altitude of around 2,169 metres, the village is known for its traditional Monpa tribal culture, stone architecture, and historic Dzong (fortified structure). Surrounded by the breathtaking landscapes of the Eastern Himalayas, Thembang offers a unique blend of natural beauty, indigenous traditions, and architectural heritage. The village is recognised for preserving centuries-old customs, traditional houses, Buddhist influences, and sustainable ways of living. It has been included in India's UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List for its outstanding cultural and historical importance.
Thembang has a history of more than a thousand years and has been an important settlement of the Monpa community for generations. The village was developed as a fortified settlement with the Thembang Dzong, a traditional structure built using stone masonry and wooden architecture to protect the community from conflicts and invasions. The Dzong features two main gates, traditional carvings, prayer walls, and ancient architectural elements reflecting the cultural links between Tibet, Bhutan, and the Himalayan regions.
