Hazaribagh National Park, technically classified as a wildlife sanctuary though long referred to locally by its earlier 'national park' name, spreads across some 184 square kilometres of forest near Hazaribagh town. Sambar, chital, wild boar and langurs are among the more commonly seen residents, with leopards present in smaller numbers, and the park's tropical forest gives it a noticeably different, denser character from the drier plains further south in the state.
Canary Hill, a well-known viewpoint near Hazaribagh town, is often combined with a visit to the park, and the wider Hazaribagh area — dotted with lakes and forested hills — makes for a pleasant, unhurried base for exploring this part of the North Chotanagpur region away from the more heavily touristed sites closer to Ranchi.
Established in 1955, the sanctuary was informally known as Hazaribagh National Park for its first two decades before its formal wildlife sanctuary designation was clarified.
