Patratu Valley

Patratu Valley, in Ramgarh district just outside Ranchi, is best known for its winding, hairpin-laden ghat road that cuts through forested hills above the reservoir formed by Patratu Dam on the Nalkari River. The drive itself has become the main attraction, drawing a steady stream of visitors — particularly on weekends — for photographs at the many viewpoints along the route overlooking the valley and dam.

Sal forest covers much of the surrounding hillside, and a growing number of resorts and viewpoints have developed around the valley in recent years to cater to day-trippers from Ranchi. The Patratu Thermal Power Station draws on the same reservoir, giving the valley a slightly unusual mix of industrial infrastructure and scenic, forested surroundings within a single short excursion from the capital.

The dam was originally built to supply water to the Ramgarh cantonment area and to serve as the main reservoir for the Patratu Thermal Power Station, with the valley's tourism appeal developing later around the scenic road built through the surrounding hills.
