Itanagar

Itanagar is the capital city of Arunachal Pradesh and the largest urban centre in the state. Located in the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas, the city is known for its scenic landscapes, rich tribal culture, and historical significance. Surrounded by lush green hills, Itanagar offers attractions such as Ita Fort, Ganga Lake (Gekar Sinyi), Jawaharlal Nehru State Museum, and Gompa Buddhist Temple. The city serves as the political, administrative, and cultural hub of Arunachal Pradesh, representing the diverse traditions of the state's many indigenous communities.

Itanagar has a history dating back to the medieval period and is associated with the ancient Mayapur Kingdom, which flourished around the 14th–15th centuries CE. The city's name is derived from Ita Fort, an ancient fort built using thousands of stone bricks, with "Ita" meaning brick in the Ahom language. The region was historically inhabited by various tribal communities, including the Nyishi people, who continue to play an important role in its cultural identity. During British rule, the area was administered as part of the North-East Frontier Agency (NEFA), and after India's independence, it became part of the administrative framework of the Northeast. Itanagar was declared the capital of Arunachal Pradesh in 1978 and has since developed into a modern city while preserving its tribal heritage, traditions, and historical landmarks.
