Pakhui (Pakke) Tiger Reserve, also known as Pakke Tiger Reserve, is a renowned wildlife sanctuary located in the Pakke Kessang district of Arunachal Pradesh. Situated at the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas, the reserve is known for its dense forests, rich biodiversity, and successful conservation efforts. Covering tropical evergreen and semi-evergreen forests, Pakke provides a safe habitat for Bengal tigers, leopards, elephants, wild dogs, gaurs, deer, and several rare bird species. The reserve is especially famous for the conservation of hornbills through community-based initiatives. With its pristine forests, rivers, and diverse wildlife, Pakke Tiger Reserve is one of the most important natural heritage areas in Northeast India.
The forests of Pakke have been protected for decades due to their ecological importance and rich wildlife. The area was first declared the Pakhui Wildlife Sanctuary in 1977 and was later upgraded to Pakke Tiger Reserve in 1999 under India's Project Tiger initiative. The reserve has played a significant role in protecting endangered species and preserving the biodiversity of the Eastern Himalayas. It is also recognised for the Hornbill Nest Adoption Programme, a unique conservation effort involving local communities to protect hornbill populations and their nesting habitats. Over the years, cooperation between forest authorities and indigenous communities has helped maintain the region's ecological balance. Today, Pakke Tiger Reserve stands as a model for wildlife conservation, combining biodiversity protection with community participation.
