Introduction

Jallianwala Bagh is a historic public garden and national memorial located near the Golden Temple in Amritsar, Punjab. It is remembered as the site of the tragic Jallianwala Bagh Massacre of 1919, one of the darkest events in India's freedom struggle against British colonial rule. The memorial preserves the memory of hundreds of innocent people who lost their lives during the incident and serves as a symbol of courage, sacrifice, and the struggle for independence. Today, Jallianwala Bagh is an important historical landmark visited by people who wish to understand India's journey towards freedom.

History

Jallianwala Bagh became internationally known on 13 April 1919, when thousands of people gathered there to peacefully protest against the Rowlatt Act and to celebrate the festival of Baisakhi. British officer Brigadier General Reginald Dyer arrived with armed troops and ordered them to open fire on the unarmed crowd without warning. The narrow exits of the enclosed garden prevented many people from escaping, resulting in hundreds of deaths and injuries. The incident created widespread anger across India and became a turning point in the freedom movement, strengthening opposition to British rule. After independence, the site was transformed into a national memorial, inaugurated in 1961 by Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the first President of India. Today, Jallianwala Bagh preserves bullet marks, memorial structures, and historical exhibits that remind visitors of the sacrifices made during India's struggle for independence.
