Khajjiar is a small saucer-shaped meadow ringed by dense deodar forest, its combination of open grassland, a small lake and surrounding mountains giving it a distinctly alpine character that has earned it comparisons to Switzerland. The compact scale of the meadow means it can be fully explored on foot within an hour, making it an easy, popular stop for visitors combining it with a wider Dalhousie itinerary.
Horse rides and paragliding are available for those wanting a more active experience of the meadow and surrounding hills, and the small Khajji Nag temple at the edge of the meadow adds a modest devotional stop alongside the area's primarily scenic appeal.
Long known to local communities for its distinctive meadow landscape, Khajjiar's promotion as 'Mini Switzerland' grew through Indian domestic tourism marketing from the latter 20th century onward, cementing its place as one of Himachal's most photographed natural spots.
