Himachal Pradesh

Himachal Pradesh is a picturesque state in northern India, nestled in the western Himalayas. Popularly known as the "Land of Snow", it is renowned for its snow-capped mountains, lush valleys, hill stations, ancient temples, Buddhist monasteries, adventure sports, and breathtaking natural beauty.

The state is one of India's leading destinations for trekking, skiing, river rafting, paragliding, mountaineering, and nature tourism. Himachal Pradesh is also famous for its apple orchards, traditional handicrafts, and rich cultural heritage.

History

1. The region has been inhabited since ancient times and is mentioned in Hindu epics such as the Mahabharata and Ramayana.
2. Numerous small hill kingdoms ruled the area for centuries, including the kingdoms of Chamba, Kullu, Bushahr, Kangra, and Mandi.
3. During the medieval period, parts of Himachal Pradesh came under the influence of the Mughal Empire and later the Sikh Empire.
4. Following the Anglo-Gorkha War (1814–1816), much of the region came under British administration and developed into popular hill stations such as Shimla.
5. After India's independence, Himachal Pradesh became a Union Territory in 1948 and attained full statehood on 25 January 1971, becoming India's 18th state.

Himachal Pradesh is located in the western Himalayas and shares borders with:

The state covers an area of approximately 55,673 sq km.

The state is famous for its UNESCO-listed Kalka–Shimla Railway, a historic narrow-gauge mountain railway connecting Kalka and Shimla.
