Kurukshetra is the town at the centre of the battlefield described in the Mahabharata, where the epic's climactic war unfolded and where Krishna is believed to have delivered the Bhagavad Gita to Arjuna. Beyond its central Brahma Sarovar tank, the wider town is scattered with numerous smaller shrines, tanks and sites each tied to specific episodes from the epic, making it possible to spend a full day tracing the Mahabharata's geography on the ground.
The Jyotisar site, marking the exact spot traditionally identified as where the Gita was spoken, and the Kurukshetra Panorama and Science Centre, which presents the epic's story through dioramas and exhibits, add further depth for visitors wanting more than a single temple stop. The town draws especially large crowds during solar and lunar eclipses, when ritual bathing in the sacred tanks is considered particularly auspicious.
Kurukshetra's association with the Mahabharata war stretches back to ancient Hindu tradition, and the town has functioned as a major pilgrimage centre for centuries, its religious significance formally recognised through consistent temple-building and tank restoration by successive rulers over that time.
