Sheikh Chilli's Tomb

Sheikh Chilli's Tomb, near Kurukshetra in the town of Thanesar, is an elegant Mughal-era mausoleum built for a Sufi saint who served as a spiritual advisor to the young Mughal prince Dara Shikoh. The tomb's blend of Persian and Mughal architectural elements, including a distinctive glazed tile dome, sets it apart from the more overtly Hindu pilgrimage sites that otherwise dominate the wider Kurukshetra area.

Sheikh Chilli himself became a folk figure of considerable renown across North India, his name later associated (likely coincidentally) with a mischievous character in regional folk tales, giving the site an additional layer of popular cultural memory beyond its architectural and religious significance.

Built in the mid-17th century under Mughal patronage, the tomb commemorates Sheikh Abd-ur-Rahim, popularly known as Sheikh Chilli, a respected Sufi teacher whose spiritual guidance was sought by members of the Mughal royal family.
