Lake Pichola is a picturesque artificial freshwater lake in the heart of Udaipur, surrounded by historic palaces, temples, hills and old city architecture. Created in the 14th century, the lake is one of the defining landmarks of Udaipur and is especially famous for the magnificent Lake Palace and Jag Mandir, which appear to float on its waters.
The lake offers beautiful views of Udaipur's heritage landscape, particularly during sunrise and sunset. Boat rides on Lake Pichola are among the most popular experiences, providing views of the surrounding palaces, ghats and Aravalli hills.
Lake Pichola was originally created in the 14th century, traditionally attributed to a local tribesman named Pichhu Banjara during the reign of Maharana Lakha. When Maharana Udai Singh II founded Udaipur in the 16th century, he expanded the lake and developed its surroundings as part of the new capital.
Over the following centuries, the Mewar rulers constructed magnificent structures around and within the lake, including City Palace, Jag Mandir and the Lake Palace. The lake became an important part of Udaipur's royal landscape and continues to be one of the city's most celebrated heritage attractions.
October to March; water levels can vary seasonally, particularly toward the end of a dry season.
By Air: Maharana Pratap Airport, Udaipur, is approximately 25–30 km from Lake Pichola. Taxis and app-based cabs are available.
By Train: Udaipur City Railway Station is around 3–4 km from the lake and has connections to major cities including Delhi, Jaipur, Mumbai and Ahmedabad.
By Road: Udaipur is well connected by road with Jaipur, Jodhpur, Ahmedabad and other cities in Rajasthan and neighbouring states. Local taxis, auto-rickshaws and buses can be used to reach the lake and nearby boat-ride points.
