Kumbhalgarh Fort

Kumbhalgarh Fort, second in significance only to Chittorgarh among Mewar's great fortresses, is famous for its massive perimeter wall — stretching over 36 kilometres and sometimes described as the 'Great Wall of India' — one of the longest continuous fortification walls in the world. The fort's remote, hilltop position and the sheer scale of its defensive walls reflect its historical role as Mewar's most secure refuge during periods of conflict.

An evening light-and-sound show narrates the fort's history, and Kumbhalgarh's relative distance from Udaipur's more central tourist circuit has kept it comparatively less crowded, rewarding visitors with a genuinely impressive sense of scale without the density of visitors found at some of Rajasthan's more central heritage sites.

Kumbhalgarh Fort was substantially built in the 15th century by Maharana Kumbha, one of the most influential rulers of Mewar. The fort formed an important part of the defensive network of the Mewar kingdom and provided a secure refuge for the rulers during periods of conflict.

The fort was strengthened and expanded over successive periods and played an important role in the history of Mewar. It is traditionally associated with the birth of Maharana Pratap, one of the most celebrated rulers of Mewar. Despite facing several attacks, Kumbhalgarh's strong natural and architectural defences made it extremely difficult to conquer. Today, it is part of the Hill Forts of Rajasthan UNESCO World Heritage Site.

By Air: The nearest major airport is Maharana Pratap Airport in Udaipur, approximately 85–90 km from Kumbhalgarh. Taxis and private vehicles are convenient options.

By Train: The nearest railway stations are Falna and Ranakpur Road, while Udaipur City is another major railhead. From the railway stations, taxis and buses can be used to reach the fort.

By Road: Kumbhalgarh is well connected by road with Udaipur, Jodhpur, Nathdwara and other destinations in Rajasthan. Taxis, buses and private vehicles are available.
