Lonavala, in the Sahyadri hills roughly midway between Mumbai and Pune, is one of Maharashtra's most popular weekend hill destinations, its forested valleys, waterfalls and hilltop forts drawing large crowds particularly during and just after monsoon, when the surrounding hills turn a vivid green. The nearby Karla and Bhaja caves, ancient Buddhist rock-cut monasteries, add historical depth to a destination otherwise centred on scenic hill views and the town's well-known chikki (brittle) sweets.
Tiger's Point and Lion's Point offer sweeping viewpoints over the surrounding valleys, and Lonavala's easy accessibility from both Mumbai and Pune has made it one of Maharashtra's most consistently visited short-break destinations, particularly crowded on weekends throughout the cooler months.
Lonavala developed as a hill station during the British colonial period, valued for its position along the developing rail route between Bombay and Pune, and has since grown into one of Maharashtra's most popular short-getaway destinations for both cities.
