Matheran is unique among Maharashtra's hill stations for a strict ban on motor vehicles, meaning visitors explore entirely on foot, horseback or aboard a narrow-gauge toy train that climbs up from the plains below — a distinction that has preserved a genuinely quiet, pollution-free atmosphere rare among Indian hill destinations. Numerous named viewpoints scattered through the surrounding forest, including Panorama Point and Louisa Point, offer dramatic views without any traffic noise to disturb the experience.
