Shore Temple is an ancient and iconic temple located on the Bay of Bengal coastline at Mahabalipuram (Mamallapuram) in Tamil Nadu. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is one of the oldest surviving structural stone temples in South India and a masterpiece of Pallava architecture. Built with granite blocks, the temple is famous for its beautiful seaside setting, towering vimanas (temple towers), and intricate carvings dedicated to Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. Standing against the backdrop of the ocean waves, the Shore Temple is one of Tamil Nadu's most recognised heritage monuments and represents the artistic excellence of the Pallava dynasty.
The Shore Temple was constructed in the 8th century CE during the reign of Pallava King Narasimhavarman II (Rajasimha), who ruled the region from approximately 700–728 CE. Unlike earlier rock-cut monuments of Mahabalipuram, the Shore Temple was built using structural stone construction, marking an important development in South Indian temple architecture. The complex originally consisted of multiple shrines, including temples dedicated to Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu (in the reclining Anantasayana form). Mahabalipuram was a major port city of the Pallava kingdom and played an important role in maritime trade with Southeast Asia. Over centuries, the temple faced damage from coastal erosion and natural forces but has been preserved through conservation efforts. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984 as part of the Group of Monuments at Mahabalipuram. Today, the Shore Temple remains a symbol of Tamil architectural heritage and the maritime legacy of the Pallava era.
