Marina Beach

Marina Beach, stretching for over 12 kilometres along Chennai's eastern edge, is among the longest urban beaches in the world, its wide sandy shore drawing enormous crowds each evening for walks, street food and simply watching the Bay of Bengal waves roll in. Several statues and memorials line the beachfront, including tributes to Tamil literary and political figures, giving the promenade a layer of civic and cultural significance beyond its recreational function.

While the beach's currents make it generally unsuitable for swimming, Marina remains central to Chennai's daily civic life, functioning as much as a communal gathering space and evening promenade as a conventional beach destination, with its scale and constant activity giving visitors a genuine sense of the city's everyday rhythms.

Developed as a formal promenade in the late 19th century under British colonial administration, Marina Beach has since grown into one of Chennai's most significant public spaces, its scale and central role in city life reflecting over a century of continuous civic development.
