Manakula Vinayagar Temple

Manakula Vinayagar Temple, dedicated to Ganesha, is one of Puducherry's oldest and most significant Hindu temples, its position near the Sri Aurobindo Ashram giving visitors a chance to experience both major strands of the town's spiritual life within a short walk of each other. The temple's resident elephant, traditionally offering blessings to devotees at the entrance, has long been one of its most recognisable features.

Predating French colonial arrival, the temple represents a continuity of Tamil Hindu religious practice in Puducherry stretching back centuries before the town's later French administrative and architectural transformation, offering a useful counterpoint to the more colonial-focused heritage sites nearby.

The temple is believed to predate Puducherry's French colonial period significantly, with the current structure having been expanded and renovated over subsequent centuries while maintaining its long-standing role as a significant local Ganesha shrine.
