Sri Aurobindo Ashram

Sri Aurobindo Ashram, in the heart of Puducherry's French Quarter, was established by the philosopher and yogi Sri Aurobindo and his spiritual collaborator Mirra Alfassa, known to devotees as 'the Mother', and remains an active spiritual community drawing seekers and visitors from across the world. The ashram's serene, flower-filled courtyard around the samadhi (memorial shrine) of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother offers a quiet space for reflection, open to visitors of all backgrounds.

Beyond the central ashram grounds, the wider community operates schools, workshops and cultural institutions throughout Puducherry, and the ashram's influence extends directly to nearby Auroville, the experimental township founded by the Mother as an extension of the same spiritual philosophy.

Sri Aurobindo settled in Pondicherry in 1910 after years of involvement in India's independence movement, turning increasingly toward spiritual practice, and the ashram formally developed around his and the Mother's teachings from the 1920s onward, growing into one of India's most significant modern spiritual communities.
