Rock Beach, running alongside Puducherry's Promenade, takes its name from the boulders lining the shore, a design feature intended to protect the coastline from erosion rather than a natural rock beach in the conventional sense. The stretch is less about swimming than about walking, sitting and people-watching along one of Puducherry's most popular gathering spots, particularly lively in the evenings when both locals and visitors gather along the seafront.
Statues along the promenade, including a prominent one of Mahatma Gandhi, and the nearby French War Memorial add points of interest along the walk, and Rock Beach's position right at the edge of the French Quarter makes it a natural anchor point for exploring Puducherry's colonial-era streets.
The rock barriers lining this stretch of coast were installed to manage coastal erosion, and the resulting promenade has since become one of Puducherry's most iconic and consistently used public spaces.
