Palitana is home to one of the most extraordinary temple complexes in the world — over 900 intricately carved marble Jain temples spread across the summit of Shatrunjaya hill, reached by climbing more than 3,500 stone steps. The sheer density and scale of temple-building on a single hilltop makes Palitana one of Jainism's most sacred pilgrimage sites and a genuinely breathtaking architectural spectacle.
Pilgrims traditionally begin the climb before dawn to reach the summit by sunrise, and the entire hill is considered so sacred that nothing, including food, may be consumed on its slopes, and no overnight stay is permitted at the summit temples — visitors must complete the descent before nightfall each day.
Temple-building at Palitana began as early as the 11th century and continued for centuries under successive patronage, with the current concentration of temples representing contributions from generations of Jain communities across India.
October to March; the physically demanding climb is best attempted early morning before the heat sets in.
