Panaji (Panjim)

Panaji, Goa's compact riverside capital, blends its Portuguese colonial heritage with the everyday rhythms of a small, easygoing Indian state capital. The Mandovi riverfront, the Church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception overlooking the main square, and the Fontainhas quarter's colourful lanes all sit within easy walking distance of one another, making Panaji unusually pleasant to explore on foot compared to most Indian state capitals.

Evening river cruises along the Mandovi, often with live music, offer a relaxed way to see the city from the water, and Panaji's manageable scale means it works well both as a base for exploring wider Goa and as a destination in its own right for a day or two of unhurried heritage walking.

Panaji grew in importance through the Portuguese colonial period, eventually replacing Old Goa as the colony's capital in 1843 after repeated epidemics made the older city increasingly unviable, and it has remained Goa's capital since.

Panaji is about 25 minutes from Goa's airport by road.
