Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, named after India's most celebrated ornithologist, protects a stretch of mangrove forest on Chorao Island in the Mandovi river, home to a wide variety of resident and migratory birds. Wooden walkways through the mangroves allow for close, relatively easy birdwatching without requiring a difficult trek, making it accessible even for casual visitors rather than only dedicated birders.
The sanctuary's proximity to Panaji makes it an easy half-day trip from the capital, and boat rides through the surrounding waterways sometimes offer sightings of the mudskippers, crabs and other mangrove-dependent wildlife that share the habitat with the sanctuary's bird population.
Established in 1988 and named in honour of Salim Ali, often called the 'Birdman of India' for his pioneering ornithological work across the subcontinent, the sanctuary protects one of Goa's most significant remaining mangrove ecosystems.
November to February, for the best birdwatching conditions and migratory activity.
