Introduction

Pasighat is the oldest town in Arunachal Pradesh and is often called the "Gateway of Arunachal Pradesh." Located in the East Siang district on the banks of the mighty Siang River (Brahmaputra), the town is known for its scenic beauty, river landscapes, and rich tribal culture. Surrounded by green hills, forests, and valleys, Pasighat is an important centre for tourism, agriculture, education, and trade in the region. It serves as a gateway to destinations such as the Siang Valley, Adi tribal villages, and nearby natural attractions, offering visitors a glimpse of Arunachal's unique traditions and Himalayan landscapes.

History

Pasighat was established in 1911 by the British administration as an important administrative centre in the North-East Frontier region, making it the first officially established town in present-day Arunachal Pradesh. Before this, the region was inhabited by the Adi tribal communities, who have a rich cultural heritage and traditional village systems. During British rule, Pasighat became significant for administration, trade, and communication due to its location along the Siang River. After India's independence, the town continued to grow as an important centre of East Siang district. Over the years, Pasighat has developed modern infrastructure while preserving the traditions, festivals, and cultural practices of the Adi people. Today, it remains one of Arunachal Pradesh's most important historical and cultural towns.
