Introduction

Aalo, formerly known as Along, is a scenic town located in the West Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh, situated along the banks of the Siyom River. Surrounded by lush green hills, valleys, and forests, Aalo is known for its natural beauty, peaceful environment, and rich tribal culture. The town is primarily inhabited by the Galo tribal community, who are known for their vibrant traditions, festivals, handicrafts, and unique way of life. With attractions such as Patum Bridge, Donyi Polo Temple, nearby waterfalls, and river landscapes, Aalo serves as an important cultural and tourism centre in western Arunachal Pradesh.

History

Aalo has a long history connected with the indigenous Galo people, who have inhabited the Siang Valley region for generations. The area was traditionally organised through village communities governed by tribal customs and social systems. During British rule, the region became part of the North-East Frontier Agency (NEFA) administration, and Aalo developed as an important administrative centre due to its strategic location in the Siang Valley. After India's independence, the town continued to grow as the headquarters of West Siang district. Over the years, Aalo has preserved its traditional tribal heritage while developing modern facilities and infrastructure. Today, it represents the cultural identity of western Arunachal Pradesh and serves as a gateway to exploring the region's natural landscapes and indigenous traditions.
