Tagore Hill, also known as Morabadi Hill after the Ranchi neighbourhood it sits in, rises about 300 feet above the city and takes its better-known name from Jyotirindranath Tagore, the elder brother of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore. Jyotirindranath bought the hillock from a local landowner and built a retreat here named Shantidham in the early 1900s, retreating into a quieter life after the death of his wife, Kadambari Devi; he lived there until his death in 1925.
A second structure on the hill, the monument known as Brahma Sthal, adds to the site's historical layer, while a flight of some 200–250 steps leads visitors to the top for panoramic views over Ranchi below. The Ramakrishna Mission Ashram sits at the foot of the hill, and the combination of history, greenery and city views has made Tagore Hill a popular, easily reached evening spot for Ranchi residents and visitors alike.
Jyotirindranath Tagore purchased the hillock, then known simply as Morabadi Hill, from local landowner Harihar Singh and built his retreat, Shantidham, there in the early twentieth century, giving the site the name by which it is known today.
