Rock Garden of Chandigarh

Rock Garden of Chandigarh is a unique sculpture garden located in Chandigarh, renowned for its extraordinary collection of artworks created entirely from recycled and discarded materials. Spread across approximately 40 acres, the garden features thousands of sculptures, waterfalls, pathways, courtyards, and artistic installations made from broken ceramics, glass bangles, tiles, industrial waste, stones, and other recycled objects. Blending creativity with environmental sustainability, the Rock Garden is one of India's most distinctive tourist attractions and a symbol of artistic innovation. It attracts millions of visitors every year for its imaginative design and serene atmosphere.

The Rock Garden was created by Nek Chand Saini, a government road inspector, who began building the garden secretly in 1957 using discarded materials collected from demolition sites and industrial waste. He transformed a hidden forested area into a remarkable artistic landscape filled with sculptures inspired by village life, animals, dancers, and traditional culture. For nearly two decades, the project remained unknown to the authorities until it was discovered in 1975. Instead of being demolished, the garden received public support and official recognition due to its exceptional creativity. The Government of Chandigarh later preserved the site, expanded it, and appointed Nek Chand as its director. Over the years, the Rock Garden grew into one of India's most celebrated examples of environmental art and sustainable design. Today, it stands as a testament to imagination, recycling, and the vision of a single artist who transformed waste into a world-famous cultural landmark.
