Capitol Complex is a remarkable architectural and administrative complex located in Chandigarh, serving as one of the finest examples of modernist architecture in the world. Designed by the renowned Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier, the complex houses the Punjab and Haryana High Court, the Secretariat, the Legislative Assembly, and several monumental structures. Spread across a vast open landscape at the foothills of the Shivalik Hills, the Capitol Complex is celebrated for its innovative design, geometric forms, exposed concrete construction, and symbolic monuments such as the Open Hand Monument, Geometric Hill, and Tower of Shadows. It is recognised globally as a masterpiece of urban planning and architecture.
The Capitol Complex was conceived in the early 1950s as the administrative heart of Chandigarh, India's first planned city built after independence. Following the Partition of India in 1947, Punjab required a new capital, leading the Government of India to commission Le Corbusier to design the city's master plan and its principal government buildings. Construction of the Capitol Complex began in the 1950s, with the Punjab and Haryana High Court completed in 1955, the Secretariat in 1958, and the Legislative Assembly in 1961. Le Corbusier also designed several symbolic monuments within the complex, including the iconic Open Hand Monument, representing peace, reconciliation, and openness. In 2016, the Capitol Complex was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of The Architectural Work of Le Corbusier, recognising its outstanding contribution to modern architecture and urban planning. Today, it stands as a symbol of independent India's vision for modern governance, innovation, and architectural excellence.
