Introduction

Sukhna Lake is a beautiful man-made reservoir located at the foothills of the Shivalik Hills in Chandigarh. Spread over approximately 3 square kilometres, the lake is one of the city's most popular recreational and tourist destinations. Known for its peaceful surroundings, scenic waterfront, and breathtaking sunrise and sunset views, Sukhna Lake attracts visitors for boating, walking, jogging, birdwatching, and photography. The lake is home to a variety of migratory and resident birds, making it an important ecological habitat as well as a favourite leisure spot for residents and tourists alike.

History

Sukhna Lake was created in 1958 under the vision of Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier, who planned Chandigarh as India's first modern planned city after independence. The lake was formed by constructing an earthen dam across the Sukhna Choe, a seasonal stream descending from the Shivalik Hills. It was designed to provide a tranquil recreational space while enhancing the city's natural landscape. Over the decades, Sukhna Lake became an integral part of Chandigarh's identity, hosting cultural events, rowing competitions, and outdoor activities. Continuous conservation measures have been undertaken to control siltation, protect the lake's ecosystem, and preserve its biodiversity. Today, Sukhna Lake remains one of Chandigarh's most iconic landmarks, reflecting the city's harmonious blend of urban planning, nature, and public recreation.
