Shantadurga Temple, dedicated to the goddess Shantadurga in her role as a peacemaker between Shiva and Vishnu, is among the most visited Hindu temples in Goa, sharing the same distinctive blend of Hindu and Portuguese colonial architectural influence found at nearby Mangeshi. Its striking white and gold facade and multi-tiered lamp tower make it a significant stop on Goa's inland temple circuit.
Like several of Goa's major temples, Shantadurga was relocated from its original coastal site during the Portuguese period, and its current location near Ponda places it within easy reach of Mangeshi Temple and the surrounding spice plantations for a combined day of inland Goa exploration.
The temple's deity was moved inland in the 18th century from its original site near Old Goa, part of the broader pattern of Hindu temple relocation away from areas under direct Portuguese religious administration during the colonial period.
