The Basilica of Bom Jesus is a historic Catholic church located in Old Goa, Goa, and is one of the most important Christian pilgrimage sites in India. The Basilica of Bom Jesus was constructed between 1594 and 1605 by the Portuguese during their rule in Goa. It was built by the Jesuit order and was consecrated in 1605 by Archbishop Aleixo de Menezes. The church became famous after the remains of St. Francis Xavier, who died in 1552 while travelling to China, were brought to Goa in 1554 and placed here in a silver casket. Over the centuries, the basilica became an important centre of Christian faith and attracted pilgrims from around the world. Its laterite stone structure, intricate interiors, and religious artworks reflect the influence of Portuguese architecture. Today, the Basilica of Bom Jesus stands as a symbol of Goa's colonial past, religious heritage, and architectural excellence.
