Mangeshi Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva in his Mangesh form, is one of Goa's most important and frequently visited Hindu temples, notable for its distinctive seven-storeyed deepstambha (lamp tower) and a blend of architectural styles reflecting both Goan Hindu and Portuguese colonial influence. The temple's white facade and tiled roof give it an appearance quite different from temples elsewhere in India, shaped by centuries of coexistence alongside Goa's dominant Portuguese Catholic architecture.
As one of the temples relocated inland during the Portuguese period of religious conversion and church-building along the coast, Mangeshi carries particular historical significance for Goa's Hindu community, and remains an active, well-attended centre of worship today.
Originally located near the coast, the temple's deity was relocated to its current inland site in the 16th century as Portuguese colonial authorities pursued policies favouring Catholic conversion in coastal areas, a pattern repeated across several of Goa's most significant Hindu shrines.
