Introduction

Silvassa is the capital of Dadra and Nagar Haveli, a green, low-key town set among forested hills and rivers, quite distinct in character from the coastal Portuguese heritage of Daman and Diu despite falling under the same union territory administration. Its relative greenery and cluster of gardens and lakes have made it a popular, easily reached weekend destination for visitors from Mumbai and Gujarat.

Unlike Daman and Diu's colonial-era architecture, Silvassa's attractions lean toward nature and recreation — landscaped gardens, boating lakes and a lion safari park sit within a short distance of the town centre, giving Silvassa a noticeably different holiday character from its coastal counterparts.

History

Historically held by Portugal alongside Daman and Diu until 1954, when local activists helped bring the territory under Indian administration ahead of Goa's own liberation, Silvassa developed afterward as the administrative capital of the newly formed union territory.
