Sirpur

Sirpur is an ancient heritage town located on the banks of the Mahanadi River in Mahasamund district of Chhattisgarh. Known for its remarkable archaeological remains, ancient temples, Buddhist monasteries, and historical significance, Sirpur was once a major centre of religion, culture, and trade in central India. The town is famous for monuments such as Lakshman Temple, Gandheshwar Temple, Surang Tila, and Buddhist Viharas, which showcase exceptional architectural and artistic traditions. With its rich history spanning Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain influences, Sirpur is one of Chhattisgarh's most important archaeological and cultural destinations.

Sirpur has a history dating back to the 5th–8th centuries CE and was the capital of the Sharabhapuriya and Panduvanshi dynasties of Dakshina Kosala. During this period, it flourished as a major political, religious, and educational centre. The town became an important hub for Buddhism, attracting monks and scholars from different parts of India and beyond. Chinese traveller Xuanzang (Hiuen Tsang) is believed to have visited the region during the 7th century and mentioned its flourishing Buddhist institutions. Sirpur also witnessed the construction of magnificent Hindu temples, including the famous Lakshman Temple, built in the 7th century and dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The city declined after the 8th century due to natural disasters, political changes, and shifting trade routes. Rediscovered through archaeological excavations in the 20th century, Sirpur today stands as a remarkable symbol of India's ancient architectural, religious, and cultural heritage.
