Introduction
Malhar is a significant archaeological site in Bilaspur district, containing the ruins of ancient temples and structures dating back well over a thousand years, evidence of the region's importance during multiple historical periods. Excavations have revealed temple foundations, sculpture and inscriptions offering insight into Chhattisgarh's early medieval history, though the site remains far less developed for tourism than better-known heritage destinations elsewhere in India.
A small site museum displays some of the artefacts recovered from excavation, giving visitors context for the scattered ruins found across the surrounding area, which continues to be studied by archaeologists.
History
Believed to have been an important settlement from at least the Satavahana period through to later medieval dynasties, Malhar's layered history spans well over a thousand years, making it one of Chhattisgarh's most archaeologically significant sites.
