Sitanadi Wildlife Sanctuary, part of the wider Sitanadi-Udanti Tiger Reserve, protects a stretch of forest along the Sita river in southern Chhattisgarh, home to wild buffalo, leopards and a variety of deer species. Its relatively remote location has kept visitor numbers modest, preserving a genuinely wild character compared to more accessible reserves elsewhere in the state.
The sanctuary's forest rest houses provide basic accommodation for those wanting to explore over more than a single day, and its combination with the neighbouring Udanti sanctuary makes it part of one of Chhattisgarh's more significant conservation landscapes for the endangered wild buffalo, a species that has vanished from most of its historic range across India.
Established as a wildlife sanctuary and later incorporated into the joint Sitanadi-Udanti Tiger Reserve, the area has been a focus of conservation efforts specifically aimed at protecting central India's dwindling wild buffalo population, one of only a handful of sites nationally where the species still survives in the wild.
