Gangrel Dam

Gangrel Dam, on the Mahanadi river, creates the large Ravishankar Sagar reservoir that has become one of the most popular weekend destinations for residents of nearby Raipur and Dhamtari. Boating facilities on the reservoir, along with a scenic dam viewpoint, draw a steady stream of day-trippers, particularly during the cooler months when the surrounding landscape is at its most pleasant.

A temple dedicated to the goddess Maa Angar Moti sits on the reservoir's edge, adding a devotional element to what is otherwise primarily a recreational destination centred on the dam and its surrounding water. Sunset views over the reservoir, with the water catching the evening light, are a particular highlight for visitors timing their trip well.

Built as an irrigation and water-supply project on the Mahanadi, Gangrel Dam has, since its construction, developed a secondary role as a popular local recreational destination for the wider Raipur and Dhamtari region, its reservoir now as significant to local leisure as to its original agricultural purpose.
