Sonamarg

Sonamarg, the 'meadow of gold', sits at the gateway to Ladakh along the Srinagar-Leh highway, its alpine meadows framed by glaciers and snow-capped peaks even in the height of summer. The town serves both as a scenic destination in its own right and as the last significant stop before the highway climbs over Zoji La pass toward Ladakh, giving it a slightly different, more transient character than Kashmir's other hill stations.

Pony treks and short hikes from Sonamarg lead to glacial lakes including Thajiwas Glacier, a popular half-day excursion reachable on foot or horseback, where visitors can walk on snow even during the summer months. The surrounding high-altitude scenery, considerably more rugged than the gentler meadows around Gulmarg and Pahalgam, gives Sonamarg a distinct, glacier-country feel that previews the terrain travellers will encounter further along the road into Ladakh.

Sonamarg's strategic position on the historic route between Kashmir and Ladakh has made it an important staging post for travellers and traders for centuries, a role that continues today with its position on the modern Srinagar-Leh highway.
