Jammu and Kashmir

Jammu and Kashmir is a Union Territory of India located in the northernmost part of the country. Renowned for its snow-capped Himalayan mountains, picturesque valleys, pristine lakes, Mughal gardens, ancient temples, and adventure tourism, it is often referred to as "Paradise on Earth."

The Union Territory is broadly divided into two regions—Jammu, known for its sacred pilgrimage sites and historic temples, and Kashmir Valley, famous for its breathtaking landscapes, houseboats, gardens, and alpine meadows. It is also a popular destination for skiing, trekking, mountaineering, river rafting, and nature tourism.

History

1. The region has a rich history dating back thousands of years and is mentioned in ancient Hindu texts, including the Nilamata Purana.
2. It was ruled by several dynasties, including the Mauryas, Kushans, Karkotas, Loharas, the Mughals, the Afghans, the Sikhs, and later the Dogra dynasty.
3. During the Dogra rule, the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir was established in 1846 under Maharaja Gulab Singh.
4. Following India's independence in 1947, the princely state acceded to India.
5. On 31 October 2019, the former State of Jammu and Kashmir was reorganized into the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.

Geography

Jammu and Kashmir is located in the western Himalayas and shares borders with:

1. Himachal Pradesh
2. Punjab
3. Ladakh

It also has international borders with Pakistan and the Line of Control (LoC).

The Union Territory covers an area of approximately 42,241 sq km.

Regular government and private buses, taxis, and tourist coaches operate from Delhi, Chandigarh, Amritsar, Pathankot, and other northern cities.
