Introduction

Tezu is a scenic town located in the Lohit district of Arunachal Pradesh, situated along the banks of the Lohit River in the eastern Himalayas. Known for its natural beauty, rich tribal culture, and historical significance, Tezu is one of the important towns of eastern Arunachal Pradesh. Surrounded by mountains, forests, and rivers, the town offers attractions such as Parshuram Kund, Glow Lake, and Dong Valley. Tezu is mainly inhabited by the Mishmi tribal communities, who are known for their unique traditions, festivals, handicrafts, and close connection with nature. With its peaceful landscapes and cultural diversity, Tezu serves as a gateway to exploring the remote beauty of the Lohit region.

History

Tezu has a long history associated with the indigenous Mishmi tribes, who have inhabited the Lohit Valley for centuries. The region was historically an important route connecting the plains of Assam with the Himalayan and Tibetan regions through ancient trade paths. During British rule, the area was administered under the North-East Frontier Agency (NEFA), and Tezu gradually developed as an administrative and trading centre. After India's independence, it became an important town in Arunachal Pradesh and later the headquarters of Lohit district. The nearby Parshuram Kund has added religious importance to the region, attracting pilgrims for generations. Today, Tezu preserves its tribal heritage, natural landscapes, and cultural traditions while serving as an important centre for tourism and administration in eastern Arunachal Pradesh.
