Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary

Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary is a spectacular protected area located in the West Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh, in the foothills of the Eastern Himalayas. Named after the Eagle's Nest mountain ridge of the Indian Army, the sanctuary is known for its incredible biodiversity, dense forests, and rich birdlife. Spread across a wide range of elevations, it includes tropical forests, subtropical forests, and temperate habitats, supporting numerous species of birds, mammals, and plants. The sanctuary is especially famous among birdwatchers for the discovery of the Bugun Liocichla, a rare bird species found only in this region. With its pristine landscapes and unique wildlife, Eaglenest is considered one of India's finest destinations for eco-tourism and nature exploration.

The forests of Eaglenest have traditionally been inhabited by indigenous communities, especially the Bugun and other local tribes, who have maintained a close relationship with the surrounding environment. The area was declared a Wildlife Sanctuary in 1989 to protect its rich biodiversity and fragile Himalayan ecosystem. The sanctuary gained international recognition after the discovery of the Bugun Liocichla bird in 2006, highlighting the ecological importance of the region. Conservation efforts have involved cooperation between forest authorities, researchers, and local communities to protect wildlife habitats and promote sustainable tourism. Today, Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary remains an important conservation area, preserving rare species, ancient forests, and the natural heritage of Arunachal Pradesh.
