Valmiki National Park lies in the Himalayan foothills of West Champaran district, right on the Nepal border, and is Bihar's only tiger reserve. The park's forests of sal and riverine grassland along the Gandak river support tigers, leopards, elephants and a wide range of birdlife, though its remoteness and comparatively low tourist infrastructure mean sightings and visitor numbers remain modest compared with more famous reserves elsewhere in India.
For travellers willing to make the journey, Valmiki offers a genuinely off-the-beaten-path wildlife experience, with jeep safaris available through the core forest zones and boat rides on the Gandak barrage providing a different vantage point on the park's riverine landscape.
The forests of Valmiki have long been associated with Maharishi Valmiki, the legendary author of the Ramayana, who is believed to have established his hermitage in this region. Historically, the area remained a vast natural forest supporting diverse wildlife and indigenous communities. Recognising its ecological importance, the region was first declared a Wildlife Sanctuary in 1978 and later became part of the Valmiki Tiger Reserve under Project Tiger in 1990. In 1994, the core protected area was officially notified as Valmiki National Park, making it Bihar's only national park. Since then, continuous conservation efforts have helped protect its rich biodiversity, strengthen tiger conservation, and preserve one of the state's most valuable natural ecosystems.
