Yusmarg

Yusmarg, meaning 'meadow of Jesus' according to local legend, is a broad, gently sloping alpine meadow ringed by pine forest, considerably less visited than Gulmarg or Pahalgam despite comparable scenery. The meadow's open, uncrowded expanse, framed by the Pir Panjal range, makes it a favourite for visitors seeking a quieter, more contemplative alternative to Kashmir's better-known hill stations.

Pony treks from Yusmarg lead toward Nilnag Lake, a small, clear alpine lake tucked into the surrounding hills, and the Doodh Ganga river, which rises nearby, adds further scenic interest to walks around the meadow. Its relative lack of development, with few hotels and limited infrastructure compared to Gulmarg, has helped Yusmarg retain a genuinely unspoiled, pastoral character that appeals particularly to visitors on repeat trips to Kashmir looking to move beyond the standard tourist circuit.

Local tradition holds that Jesus rested at the meadow during a journey through the region, giving Yusmarg its name, though the meadow has more concretely served for generations as summer pastureland for local shepherding communities.
